I am no longer in the Dallas area (or living in Texas even), so will not be posting updates and events here for the DFW artist community. Hopefully, the original creators of the Dallas Sketchgroup blog will keep on doing so instead. :)

ConceptArt.org / Massive Black Dallas 2009 Workshop!!

Just announced yesterday on conceptart.org, Dallas is the host city for the next CA/ Massive Black, Inc. Workshop! Here's the info that's been posted so far:

The next workshop is coming hard and fast. Are you ready? We are.

Conceptart.org and Massive Black have put together a stellar list of instructors, great sponsors, and a fresh program covering aspects from the games, toy, film, and fine art industries. The venue is beautiful. We are right next door to a gorgeous museum full of world class art, and have more planned than ever before. When I say we have more planned, I am saying we are pulling out all the stops. Art, jobs, culture, music, performers, training, and even more will be happening. We have a great list of sponsors including Google, SMU, the Guildhall, ReelFX, the prestigious AFI film festival, Corel and many others. This is going to be a big show with more art than ever before.

Time is short. Much to do. The official announcement will come this week and all info will be released then.

Tuition is 600 bucks and we will have an early bird offer which includes free downloads, cheaper tuition, and more. All the info will come this next week. Start getting ready folks...we are going to Dallas and will be shaking the art world from the top to bottom.

We chose Dallas as it is central to everyone here in the US and is a very affordable city to travel to. Of course, the local sponsors are world class too. This is going to be a great show.

The Shanghai show is still in the works but has been moved to late 2009 in order for us to find addtional sponsors. Dallas will be the only workshop we do in North America in 2009.

Something Completely Different: Dallas Dr. Sketchy

I just happened to hear about an event today that sounds cool: a Dallas Dr. Sketchy event perfect for an additional bit of Halloween weekend creativity (for adult artists). I've heard alot about these rather fun figure drawing sessions (NYC, Seattle, Vancouver, Austin), but haven't had the opportunity to attend one until now. It looks like there's a session this weekend at City Tavern on November 2nd:

Ok so what's this all about anyway?
Well, just show up at one of our monthly sessions with your paper, easel or drawing board or whatever and any dry medium of your choice (dry mediums are pencil--charcoal--pastels--watercolors are ok too etc.)
NOW this is where it gets good! We supply the hottest most fabulous outrageously delicious burlesque superstars, roller derby babes, amazing contortionists, and other assorted local interesting muses for your drawing delight. As if the eye candy and sketching madness wasn't enough, be prepared for a heavy dose of fun.
Games and contests? Yes, there will be some.
Prizes? Of course, many.
Drinking and debauchery? You bet your sweet little ass.

I'm doing my first serious concept art project for school. I would appreciate any feedbacks from you guys. I posted a thread on conceptart.org, and will update it several times a week as the project rolls on. I've finished the initial versions of character sheet, weapon sheets, and vehicle sheets, and am trying to crack the environment concept. Any comments would be appreciated! Thanks lots,

Events in February...

I've just come back from the NYC Toy Fair (check out some of the cool action figures that will be coming out over on action-figure.com), and I do believe some of the Dallas sketchgroup game artists may still be at the GDC (Feb 18-22) over in San Francisco. But, there is at least one event in the Dallas area next weekend that some Sketchgroup artists might want to check out: ConDFW.

ConDFW 2008 is "A science fiction and fantasy event" taking place in Richardson Feb 22-24. Artist Donato Giancola is an Artist Guest of Honor. If you're into reading/watching Science Fiction and Fantasy, there will be a nice variety of authors and additional scifi/fantasy artists to check out as well, with Peter S. Beagle of 'The Lost Unicorn" fame as Author Guest of Honor (BTW artist David Cherry from Ensemble Studios is also listed as attending).

That's about all that I know going on for the rest of February...if anyone in the group has any additional event info that they'd like to share, please post a comment and I'll update this post so we can all see it.

Austin/Dallas Sketchgroup Get together!

Just wanted to let everyone know about the upcoming Austin/Dallas sketchgroup that we will be having. If you are planning on going, please list whether or not you will be attending so we can get an idea to our number. Also, thanks to Paul Richards and the Austin Sketchgroup for hosting and setting this up! This should be a good chance for all of us to enjoy some art, and get to know other great talent around the extended area.

Zero One Studio is located behind the Mystic Monkey Tattoo Emporium at 4607 Bolm - at the intersection of Springdale and Bolm in East Austin (across from Blue Genie Art). The entrance to the studio is at 904 1/2 Chote. (in between 904 and 906) This is right near the intersection of Springdale and Bolm in East Austin. (Will probably have some additional signage pointing people to the entrance.)

Springdale is about 1 mile south of MLK on Airport. Or from the south Bolm is about 1/2 mile north of 7th st on Springdale.

From Airport Blvd. you go south on Springdale, cross the railroad tracks and take the 2nd left onto Lyons. Then take the first left onto Chote. Look for the warehouse on the left side of the street down the block 100 feet or so. There is a sign on the fence/gate that says "Zero One Studio". The entrance is on the left side of the building.

PARKING: There is plentiful parking in the grassy area behind the building and is accessible by turning right on Mansell, and right again on Chote (look for a wire-mesh gate and sign). Additional parking can overflow on Chote or to the railroad easement across from the tattoo shop on Bolm. Please do not park directly in front of the tattoo shop. Carpooling is recommended. Neighborhood watch is in effect, but as a precaution don't leave anything valuable in your car. You're responsible for your belongings.

To bring :
-cushion or whatever you need to be comfortable (There will be tables and folding chairs as well as limited couch seating.)
-beverages (There's a little convenience store next door that has drinks, ice and smokes, so don't worry about toting too much.)
-special lunch requirements (otherwise we'll probably be ordering pizza from a nearby Little Caesars, or getting Sonic burgers)
-work to work on (sketchbooks / w.i.p.s) + supplies
-work to show/exhibit (optional -- the place would work well as a makeshift gallery and is used as a photography studio during the week)-inspirational materials / reference
-laptops (wireless passwords pending)
-ipods (will have a rig for playing music)
-cameras (for documenting!)
-cash donation (suggested for Austin attendees, since we are hosting -- Once we have a ballpark figure for venue and other costs, we can figure all this out)
-cash for downtown parking (should we decide to migrate down there afterwards -- we'll be close)

+Spouses welcome! (no pets please)
++Smoking will be allowed outside the building...should be a coffee can out there.
+++People interested in doing graffiti/tag art are welcome do to this on the side of the buiding the Zero One entrance is on. That's what it's for!

Currently there is no set format -- just a casual day-long meet-and-greet, and a chance to jam on some work. Future sessions may feature a lifedrawing component and/or special presentation. Trickle in and out as you please. In the evening, whenever people are feeling it, we can go downtown and grab drinks.

Some local events that Dallas sketch artists might want to check out:

Wizard World Texas
This fun comic book convention will be taking place November 16-18, 2007 at the Arlington Convention Center. Read this article for a review of last year’s successful event and hear about some of the professional artists that had booths in the Artists Alley. It should be a great place to get some creative inspiration.

Waxahachie World War 2 Weekend
Apparently Waxahachie is turned into an occupied French town and is recaptured by the Allies for the weekend of November 9-11. Also includes other events honoring veterans. Might be a great opportunity for some life drawing or possibly reference photography for future projects...

The Dallas Sketchgroup is up and running again for all those interested in getting together to draw on a sunday! We will be getting together every Sunday from 11:30 to 3:00, at the Half Price Books on 5803 E Northwest Hwy Dallas, TX 75231 (214) 379-8000).
